What’s New

The object is significant in my work. With its own identity, name and purpose. Perhaps multiple identities as it journeys from place-to-place. At times, treasured; displayed on a surface or in a cabinet or vitrine in the home. At other times, forgotten, broken, hidden away or discarded. Often these objects end up in a charity shop. There are memories and meaning attached to these stranger's objects.

Since my teenage years, I have been drawn to objects and clothing that has been used or worn. For this project, I visited charity shops across London in search of ceramic pieces—decorative objects that might once have been displayed or reserved for special occasions. I would ask for the item to be wrapped in newspaper which, to me, also captures a moment in time. Within the pages, I searched for a quote that resonated with the ideas I wanted to convey and incorporated it into the image. It was essential that the cashier wrapped the piece and chose the newspaper without my interference. The quotes reflect the deeply human tensions we experience in trying to remain authentic, often code-switching in order to ‘fit in’.
